Rubellite is the red or deep pink variety of tourmaline. Rubellite is also the rarest gem in its family. As its name suggests, it is occasionally mistaken for ruby. Rubellite's purplish-red color is due to manganese. The more manganese present the deeper the tone and saturation, but this can also create more inclusions.
In 1998, some of the finest and largest rubellite tourmalines were discovered in farming areas about 40 kilometers from the city of Ibadan in Nigeria's Oyo state. Unfortunately, these deposits were virtually mined out within two years of discovery and are largely depleted today.
This rare and highly sought after gem displays an intense magenta color with no brown overtones. It is precision cut in an outstanding oval design and is super clean. A bespoke gem that would be perfect for a family heirloom.
